Smartseller has celebrated the official opening of ‘The Tasting Room – Taste. Share. Remember Slovenia’, the newly designed Gate Shop at Ljubljana Airport managed by Fraport Slovenija.

Travelers can step into a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy gourmet retreat or stylish wine cellar, allowing them to unwind and enjoy a taste of Slovenia.

Lars Hennecke, Head of Business Development of Smartseller Group, said, "With The Tasting Room, we are creating a travel retail experience that goes beyond the traditional. Our goal is to make Slovenia's culinary diversity accessible to travelers. Thanks to our close collaboration with local suppliers, each visit offers a truly authentic experience."

Sense of place: The Tasting Shop offers a curated selection of products, focusing exclusively on Slovenian goods

The renovated Gate Shop is the third redesigned unit at Ljubljana Airport managed by Fraport Slovenija. It follows the successful opening of the main shop in the newly built terminal in July 2021, its rebranding in 2025, and the introduction of a new hybrid unit in the non-Schengen area under the “Little Slovenia” brand.

The three shops offer passengers three different concepts, each providing a unique shopping experience.

The new Gate Shop concept has also been warmly welcomed by Fraport Slovenija. Urška Binter, Head of Commercial, highlighted how the space reflects the airport’s broader vision. “At Fraport Slovenija, passenger satisfaction, a local touch in our offerings, and a memorable experience are of utmost importance,” she said. “We are proud that The Tasting Room at Ljubljana Airport captures exactly that – an authentic impression of Slovenia’s rich flavors. A single taste or scent can instantly bring back memories of Lake Bled, a stroll through Ljubljana, or the view from Mount Triglav. Our partner, Smartseller, truly understood how to design a space that combines comfort, local identity, and a fresh approach to retail – exactly what we were looking for.”

Slovenian Specialties

The new the Tasting Room concept is centered around the motto ‘Taste. Share. Remember Slovenia’. It offers a curated selection of products, focusing exclusively on Slovenian goods, and covering approximately 50 square meters, complemented by an equally sized outdoor seating area.

The emphasis is on the ‘experience’ of the products. Guests are invited to sample premium oils, fine chocolates, and regional wines. A central feature is the self-service wine dispenser, where customers can create their own tasting flight of eight wines and serve themselves. Smartseller said it collaborates closely with local suppliers to ensure the products' authenticity and quality. These partnerships are an important part of the concept and help bring passengers closer to the real Slovenia.

The shop's appearance significantly contributes to its unique atmosphere. The wooden aesthetic, combined with modern accents like metal and LED light walls, creates an inviting ambiance. This design highlights the concept and welcomes passengers to enjoy the products in a comfortable setting.
