Lotte Duty Free's ‘mobile passport service’

Lotte Duty Free Shop has introduced a 'mobile passport service' to improve the convenience of duty free shopping for domestic and foreign customers. If you have a smartphone, you can do duty free shopping at downtown duty free shops without a passport.

The company is the first in the industry to introduce 'passport-free duty free shopping' in consideration of providing new experiences to customers through digital transformation and utilization of customer data and scalability of services.

In accordance with the 15 tasks of the ‘duty free industry revitalization plan’ announced by the Korea Customs Service in September last year, identity verification and duty free purchases were permitted through smartphone authentication at downtown duty free shops that introduced data-linked protection technology. Accordingly, Lotte Duty Free Shop preemptively collaborated with Road System, which has a digital distributed identification (DID) patent, and completed the system development.

First, after first recognizing information such as passport number and expiration date through the camera OCR (Optical Character Recognition Device), when the smartphone is placed on the passport, the e-passport IC chip is automatically scanned. Then, when a QR code with digital distributed identification (DID) blockchain technology is issued, mobile passport registration is completed.

Lotte Duty Free Shop has strengthened security through two-way authentication using OCR and e-passport IC chips, and also conducts real-time verification using public computer network databases of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Justice to check the expiration date and length of stay of the passport. Furthermore, the QR code generated when using a mobile passport is regenerated every 30 seconds to prevent fraudulent use.

The registration and authentication process for the 'mobile passport'

Starting June 20, domestic and foreign members of Lotte Duty Free can conveniently enjoy duty free shopping at the main store in Myeong-dong and World Tower in Seoul with a mobile passport. The Busan and Jeju branches will also be introduced as soon as the approval process is completed. Mobile passports can be easily registered after accessing the ‘My Page’ tab in the Lotte Duty Free application. If you authenticate once, you can use it for up to 10 years of passport validity.

Joo-Nam Kim, CEO of Lotte Duty Free Shop, said, "Thanks to the government's active support to restore the competitiveness of the Korean duty free industry, we preemptively introduced the mobile passport service."

Meanwhile, ROAD System, which is in charge of developing Lotte Duty Free Shop's mobile passport service, is the only IT tourism venture company in the world that holds a patent for generating and verifying passport information based on digital distributed identification.
