Central Africa development: Lagardère Travel Retail sets down roots in Cameroon

By Wendy Morley

Lagardère Travel Retail is set to take a major new step in its Central African development strategy with the opening of its Aelia Duty Free stores at the international airports of Douala and Yaoundé-Nsimalen in Cameroon.

More than a commercial expansion, this initiative reflects a strong ambition: to stimulate regional economic growth, generate sustainable jobs, and provide travelers, an enriched and memorable experience. The international group reaffirms its ambition to offer travelers across Africa world-class service that meets the highest international standards.

Modern, immersive spaces with strong local roots

Centrally located in passenger terminals, the new Aelia Duty Free shops span a total area of 500 square meters. Designed in collaboration with several Cameroonian companies specialized in commercial interior design, the spaces were entirely built and furnished by local artisans. Thanks to the logistical, craft, and commercial partnerships initiated by Sountou Bousso, CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail Western Africa, over 100 direct and as many indirect jobs have been created.

Lagardère Travel Retail said it is proud to support local value creation and strengthen the country’s economic ecosystem. “This is a purposeful and proudly embraced decision to ground the project in the principles of sustainable and equitable development,” the company stated.

The official inauguration will take place on April 10, 2025, at Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport, in the presence of Dag Rasmussen, Chairman and CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail, Sountou Bousso, CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail Western Africa, the Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhè, Thomas Owona Assoumou, Director General of Cameroon Airports (ADC), along with local authorities and institutional partners.
