Avolta expands Mediterranean presence with extensive Tunisia contract

By Wendy Morley

Avolta has secured its first entry into Tunisia with a contract to operate duty free stores across five airports, marking a significant step in its Destination 2027 strategy. The new agreement will see the global travel retail and F&B player establish 15 stores covering nearly 80% of Tunisia's air traffic.

The retail program spans Tunis-Carthage International Airport, Djerba–Zarzis International Airport, Sfax-Thyna International Airport, Tozeur–Nefta International Airport and Tabarka–Aïn Draham International Airport. Each location will feature the full range of duty free categories including perfumes & cosmetics, liquor and food & confectionery. The company will also introduce its proprietary concepts Mind, Body & Soul and Haute Parfumerie to tap into growing demand for wellness products and customized fragrance experiences.

"With Tunisia, we are entering one of the most important duty-free markets in Africa while building our presence in the main tourist destinations bordering the Mediterranean Sea," says Luis Marin, President & CEO of Avolta's Europe, Middle East & Africa Region. "In line with our Destination 2027 strategy, we are further diversifying our geographical presence and continuing with our priority to execute and run stores that share the DNA of the airports and cities they represent, to include digitalization and new technology as much as possible. We are committed to bringing together international concepts with local flavors and specialties, delivering a strong sense of place."

The expansion aligns with Avolta's broader strategy of geographical diversification through its three core segments – duty free, food & beverage and convenience. The Switzerland-based company currently operates over 5,100 points of sale across 73 countries, serving approximately 2.3 billion passengers annually through airports, motorways, cruises, ferries, railways, border shops and downtown locations.

For the Tunisian Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (OACA), the partnership represents an opportunity to enhance the passenger experience. The authority noted: "We are proud to have partnered with the leading global travel experience player Avolta to improve the travel experience for millions of passengers, offering unmatched service and convenience. We look forward to further supporting their expansion in the country."
