Iraq Duty Free hails ‘great’ year as renovations continue

By Hibah Noor

Financial Links-owned Iraq Duty Free capped an “exceptional” trading year in 2018 with the opening of its renovated Departures shop in the Iraqi Airways terminal of Baghdad International Airport on December 17.

“We had exceptional trading in 2018, as we experienced an increase in sales over 2017 by a total of 25%,” Fouad A. Jabbour, General Manager, Iraq Duty Free, told Gulf-Africa Duty Free magazine. “Considering that the Iraqi Airways Departures shop was closed for nearly four months, it is considered a great year for us.”

After the renovation, the newly opened store experienced an immediate increase in sales of 35% over last year’s December figure. “We are sure that the growth will continue throughout 2019,” said Jabbour.

Duty Free's next projects will be the renovation of its two shops in the International Airlines terminal for Departures and Arrivals, which should start by the second quarter of 2019, in addition to the renovation of the Arrivals shop at Basrah Airport.

These new airport duty free openings should take place by the last quarter of 2019, he said.
