IATA reports strong November passenger growth
Global passenger demand measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) grew 8.1% in November 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, according to new data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Available seat kilometers (ASK) increased 5.7% year-on-year, with load factors reaching an all-time November high of 83.4%.
International traffic saw particularly strong performance with demand rising 11.6% compared to November 2023, driven by carriers in Europe and Asia-Pacific. Capacity grew 8.6% year-on-year while load factors reached 83.4%.
Middle Eastern airlines recorded an 8.7% year-on-year increase in demand, with capacity up 3.9% and load factors reaching 81%. Asia-Pacific carriers led regional growth with a 19.9% increase in demand alongside 16.2% higher capacity and 84.9% load factors.
European airlines saw demand rise 9.4% with capacity up 7.1% and industry-leading load factors of 85%. North American carriers reported more modest growth of 3.1% in demand and 1.6% in capacity, achieving 81% load factors.
Domestic markets showed slower growth at 3.1% year-on-year, with the US market contracting 2.7% due to reduced low-cost carrier activity, though mainline carriers maintained positive growth.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh highlights ongoing industry challenges: "November was another month of strong growth in the demand for air travel with an overall expansion of 8.1%. The month was also another reminder of the supply chain issues that are preventing airlines from getting the aircraft they need to meet growing demand. Capacity growth is lagging demand by 2.4 ppts and load factors are at record levels."
He adds that airlines are missing opportunities to enhance customer service, modernize fleets and improve environmental performance due to delivery delays, calling for aerospace manufacturers to prioritize supply chain solutions in 2025.
