Schiphol passenger numbers climb as network expansion continues
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport recorded significant growth in 2024, handling 66.8 million passengers – an 8% increase over 2023. The rise in traffic was supported by a 7% growth in aircraft movements, reaching 473,814 flights throughout the year.
The airport strengthened its position as a major European hub, with 42.5 million origin and destination passengers and 24.3 million transfer passengers moving through its facilities. Following international counting methods, the 12 million unique transfer passengers were counted twice – once on arrival and once on departure.
Schiphol maintained its strong network connectivity, serving 301 destinations including 124 intercontinental routes. This extensive network earned the airport second place in European connectivity rankings and fifth globally, according to the ACI Airport Industry Connectivity Report 2024. The airport led Europe in the number of direct continental destinations served.
European traffic dominated passenger flows with 45.3 million travelers, while intercontinental routes handled 21.5 million passengers. The United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, the United States and Turkey emerged as the top destinations for departing travelers.
The cargo sector also showed robust performance, with volumes increasing 8% to reach 1.49 million tonnes – 10% above 2019 levels. This growth came despite a slight 2% decrease in cargo-only flights to 15,661 movements.
These preliminary figures demonstrate Schiphol’s continued recovery and expansion in both passenger and cargo operations. Final traffic statistics will be released with the airport’s financial statements in February.
