Munich Airport reports strong growth in 2024, making it the country's fastest-growing hub

Munich Airport has emerged as Germany’s fastest-growing aviation hub, welcoming 41.6 million passengers in 2024 – an increase of 4.5 million travelers compared to the previous year. This robust performance reflects strengthening demand across both European and intercontinental routes.

The airport saw significant operational growth with aircraft movements rising 8% to exceed 327,000 takeoffs and landings. Load factors remained strong at 82%, surpassing 2023’s record levels and indicating efficient capacity utilization.

Intercontinental traffic showed particularly impressive gains with a 17% increase in long-haul flights, while European and Mediterranean routes grew by 12%. The expansion has enhanced Munich’s global connectivity, with the airport now serving 224 destinations across 66 countries through 96 airlines, including five dedicated cargo carriers.

The cargo sector demonstrated equally strong performance, with freight volumes climbing 11% to reach 308,000 metric tons. This growth in both passenger and cargo operations underscores Munich’s strengthening position as a key European aviation hub.

“I am delighted that we can report such strong growth in both passenger numbers and destinations in Munich,” says Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport. “This confirms that there is high demand for air travel and underlines the Munich hub’s importance to the economy and population of Bavaria and far beyond.”

The results highlight Munich’s successful navigation of the post-pandemic recovery period and its expanding role in global air transportation. With continued growth across all major metrics – from passenger numbers to cargo volumes – the airport is well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory.
