ASUR passenger numbers up for December

By Ronnie Lovler

Mexico’s Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has revealed data that show passenger numbers at all the airports where it has operations is up for December 2018 when compared with the previous December.

The combined figures for all ASUR airports show an increase of 11.6%.

Overall, the sharpest increases were registered in Puerto Rico, with a 20.9% rise and in Colombia, where the numbers were up by 26%. Mexico showed less of a gain, but still registered higher numbers at 5.2%.

All the figures reflect comparisons between the period of December 1 to 31, 2018 and 2017. Passengers in transit and general aviation are excluded for Mexico and Colombia, according to an ASUR news release.

The Puerto Rico numbers are an indication of the recovery and resumption of normal passenger traffic after Hurricane Maria, which hit the island in September 2017 with a devastating blow.

When broken down, passenger traffic at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan showed a 41.3% increase in international traffic and an 18.9% increase in domestic traffic for the period.

Colombia’s numbers for the same period registered a 10% increase in international traffic and a 29.3% gain for domestic passengers. Mexico’s domestic traffic was up by 11.1%, but under 1% at .4% for international travel.

ASUR has operations at nine airports in Mexico and six in Colombia, in addition to its holdings in Puerto Rico.
