Nordic gin Skagerrak unveils new, lighter bottle—now available in stores
Skagerrak, the Nordic gin crafted in Gjelleråsen, Norway, is now available in a more environmentally conscious bottle. Skagerrak combines over 100 years of distilling expertise with local ingredients from the coastal botanicals, creating a classic gin with a Nordic twist.
Skagerrak Nordic Dry Gin, launched in 2022, introduces a redesigned lighter bottle. The new bottle is more streamlined and uniquely crafted for Skagerrak, with an average reduction of 28% in glass of existing sizes.
"We are excited to introduce more environmentally conscious packaging for our premium gin, crafted in Norway with Nordic ingredients. This redesigned, more material-efficient bottle is an important step toward reducing our environmental impact and supporting responsible production”, says Suvi Reinikkala, Brand Marketing Director at Anora.
The new bottle is made from 60% recycled glass—more than double the amount used in the previous bottle. Additionally, the deep ocean-blue bottle is compatible with all recycling systems internationally.
“The possibility to recycle all Skagerrak bottles is an important factor in creating a sustainable life cycle," says Reinikkala.
By the end of November 2024, the remodeled Skagerrak Gin will be widely available across all Nordic countries, as well as in Germany, travel retail, and many more other markets. In addition to the current 50 cl and 70-cl sizes, the gin will, for the first time, be offered in a 100-cl bottle and is now available at selected tax-free locations in airports and on ferries.
Nordic nature and flora: the heart and soul of Skagerrak
Skagerrak is born from the sea that surrounds Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, drawing inspiration from the rich nature of the Skagerrak Strait. The new bottle design reflects this heritage, featuring three dots symbolizing the guiding lights of the lighthouses guarding the strait: Hanstholm, Lindesnes, and Pater Noster. These beacons have long ensured safe passage for seafarers, and they now serve as symbols anchoring Skagerrak’s Nordic roots.
Crafted at Anora’s distillery in Gjelleråsen, Norway, Skagerrak benefits from over 100 years of expertise in distilling high-quality botanical spirits. However, the production facilities, completed just a few years ago, feature state-of-the-art technology, including the use of geothermal energy.
“Our goal from the very beginning was to create a premium Nordic gin that could stand out in the toughest international competition,” highlights Reinikkala. “Consciousness and locality are inseparable parts of our DNA. We prioritize local ingredients and sustainable production. One concrete example is that we use rescued potatoes from local farmers that would otherwise go to waste.”
A classic gin with a Nordic twist
Skagerrak was developed in close collaboration between six Nordic bartenders, two from each country, resulting in a classic gin with a unique Nordic twist inspired by the flavors from the local flora. The gin is double distilled to give it an extra light and fresh feel. It combines elderflower, rosehips, and sea buckthorn with classic gin botanicals such as juniper, coriander seeds, and angelica root—creating a fresh, floral, and juniper forward flavor profile.
The seaweed dulse has been added for a maritime touch, giving it salty and umami-like top notes. The fresh citrusy top notes are derived from caraway through a special fractional distillation process.
The gin’s clean and crisp character makes it an ideal base for classic cocktails like the Dry Martini and Gin & Tonic, as well as a versatile companion to various mixers.
