The Macallan unveils Home Collection, River Spey
The Macallan has introduced The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey, the second edition in a limited annual release series inspired by the extraordinary natural beauty of The Macallan Estate. With an RRSP of US$275, The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey is available now exclusively from The Macallan Estate Boutique, The Macallan Global Travel Retail boutiques, domestic and e-boutiques.
The River Spey flows through The Macallan Estate and is an enduring source of inspiration. This exceptional single malt whisky embodies the nature found at the heart of the distillery, showcasing the natural beauty of the birthplace of the brand.
In collaboration with photo-realist artist Michelle Lucking, the whisky is presented in a pack featuring a watercolor painting that captures the River Spey in its winter beauty. Lucking has used natural pigmented pastels to create a suite of six original paintings of the River Spey, bringing the water to life with an intensity and realism which captures the river’s light and movement.
Since The Macallan founder Alexander Reid first established the distillery on the Estate, nearly 200 years ago, The Macallan has been a proud custodian of its 1.5-mile stretch of the River Spey, nurturing and protecting its waters and the wildlife around it. Fittingly, this exceptional limited release is the color of raw umber, a natural pigment that has been used by artists for centuries to capture the depth and detail of nature. Rich hints of raisins, treacle sponge and fruit on the nose are accompanied by velvety notes of sultana, butterscotch and chocolate on the palate, before giving way to a medium finish with toasted oak spice.
The Collection was unveiled in June 2022, with the launch of The Distillery. The series of single malt whiskies celebrates The Macallan’s origins, which have been deeply rooted in community since 1824.

Artist Michelle Lucking added, “Water for me is a constant source of inspiration, I love exploring it, painting it - and so when The Macallan asked me to capture the majestic River Spey - and its importance to them, their whisky and the Estate - as part of the Home Collection it just felt to me like a really brilliant fit.
“The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey is all about a deep connection to nature – The Macallan wanted me to capture the majestic River Spey and its importance to them, the Estate and the whisky. I wanted to convey the importance not just of the river itself, but all its elements, the pebbles, the amazing autumnal colors in the surrounding landscape - from the soft yellows and ambers to the burnt umbers and deep treacle tones - hues that I had seen reflected in the natural color of the whiskies.”
“Creating something of beauty, it takes patience. I like to recreate all that fine detail with natural pigmented pastels. Layering and layering, creating all the different blends of color, getting finer and finer so you end up with this incredible fine detail and that’s something you can never rush. A lot like creating whiskies here at The Macallan - it takes time.”
