Gucci emphasizes artisanal processes in fragrance collection expansion

By Wendy Morley

The Alchemist's Garden collection features distinctive bottles for each alchemical category, with colors and symbols reflecting their transformation processes

The expansion of Gucci's The Alchemist's Garden luxury fragrance collection demonstrates the brand's commitment to artisanal perfumery, with three new scents joining the lineup alongside best-seller Tears from the Moon. The collection bridges traditional alchemy with modern perfume-making techniques, drawing inspiration from Florence's Renaissance heritage.

The new additions - Vanilla Firenze, Fiori di Neroli and Osmanthus Nectar - showcase the perfumers' focus on ingredient transformation through four alchemical stages linked to earth, air, water and fire. Each scent undergoes specific processes designed to reach what Gucci terms "olfactive quintessence."

For Vanilla Firenze, perfumer Véronique Nyberg combines Italian Iris Pallida Concrete with three vanilla extracts. The iris rhizomes are harvested and dried in artisanal caves before being ground and processed in an alembic. The scent incorporates Vanilla Infusion, Vanilla Absolute and gas-extracted Vanilla Essence, enriched with Myrrh Resinoid.

Fiori di Neroli represents a partnership with Liguria's last remaining neroli producer, a family business dating to 1856. Perfumers Mathieu Nardin and Julie Massé work with fresh neroli flowers that are steam-distilled in an alembic. The resulting essence is combined with Petitgrain Essential Oil and Cedar extracts.

For Osmanthus Nectar, perfumer Natalie Lorson took an innovative approach by translating taste into scent, capturing the apricot-like qualities of osmanthus flowers. The process involves preserving fragrant molecules under glass as the flowers bloom, complemented by molecularly-distilled Sandalwood Essential Oil.

The collection maintains its original categorization system, with fragrances divided into Substratum (earth-based ingredients), Vaporum (aerial qualities), Liquidum (water distillation) and Ignis (experimental techniques). Each category features distinctive bottle designs and symbols reflecting their alchemical properties.

Creative Director Sabato De Sarno's new campaign for the collection emphasizes the tactile and sensory aspects of the ingredients and their transformation processes.
